Getting the Most Our of Your Family Weekend Visit to UNCW

Family Weekend at UNCW will be September 22-24 this year and is always jam-packed with activities. It's a short but sweet time to spend with your college student, so making the most of it is important. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable weekend.

Participation Counts

Be a good role model by attending events, speakers, or lectures organized by the college. It's a chance to see what campus life is all about and maybe even learn something new yourself. Your student will be proud!

Stay Flexible

Be ready to go with the flow once you're in town. If the weather sucks or everyone just wants some chill time, be willing to change your plans and adapt. Make reservations ahead of time if you can but be OK with letting them go if you need to pivot. Be advised: many places are closed Sunday and Monday!

Keep Expectations in Check

While seeing your student again is awesome, don't expect the world from this weekend. They may want to hang out with their friends, catch up on some studying, or not spill all the beans about their new life just yet. Give it time and let things unfold naturally.

Let Your Student Take the Wheel

Your student might be excited to show you around campus now that they're a seasoned pro. They might introduce you to their new buddies or want to join in on all the planned activities. Follow their lead and let them decide how much you do.

Watch What You Say

It can be tempting to offer advice on everything from dorm room décor to their choice of friends but try to keep your comments to yourself. This is a time to enjoy being together and get to know their college life without being judgmental.

Stay Positive

If your student has struggled with the college transition, your visit might bring up some venting or homesickness. Keep the vibe positive and tell them you are proud of their progress. Focus on the fun moments you're sharing rather than dwelling on potential issues.

Know When to Say Goodbye

When the weekend is winding down, be prepared to leave. It's tempting to linger and soak up more time with your student, but remember they have classes and commitments. Let them get back into the college groove and look forward to Thanksgiving Break.
